Its a good time to pick a few top choice schools and apply to them as soon as possible.  As long as you don't apply early decision you can apply to as many schools as you like and not be forced to attend any of them.  It will take a few weeks or months to get all the paperwork together, then you need some time to apply for all the institutional scholarships you might be eligible for.

I applied in the first semester of my senior year.

It takes a long time to get everything in order so you can get a head start... Longer than it does to set up everything if you're expecting a kid or something...
