The number of students applying for federal aid is way up this year and projections put it even higher next year.  Congress has done a little bit to free up some extra money, but more than ever its going to be important for students to send in their FAFSA applications as soon as possible when 2009 hits.  I know it sounds a little early to be thinking about next year's FAFSA when this school year hasn't even started, but there is a practice/draft form available at the Department of Education website.

Considering the state of the economy and the student loan industry, I'd say there's no such thing as being too far ahead of things this year.
